Rebecca Applin - Biography

Telling stories through music is my passion.I studied Music as an undergraduate at Cambridge University, followed by a Masters degree in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music, and have been composing for theatre, dance, radio and screen ever since. Awards have included:
Cameron Mackintosh Resident Composer Award (New Wolsey and Mercury Theatres, facilitated by Mercury Musical Developments),
Finalist in the S&S Award (for JABBERWOCKY),
Twice finalist in the Stiles and Drewe Best New Song Prize,
Twice BAFTA nominated.

I have a particular passion for musical theatre, and have worked on many new musicals including THE 45TH MARVELLOUS CHATTERLEY VILLAGE FETE, licensed by Perfect Pitch, and THE DEVIL'S DISCIPLE, (commissioned by the George Bernard Shaw Estate).

Much of my commissioned work is as a Composer and Sound Designer. Some highlights have included BULLY BOY which opened the newly refurbished Mercury Studio, THE WOLVES OF WILLOUGHBY CHASE (Forest Forge) and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Mercury Theatre).

I have a particular interest in actor-musician work and am always looking for ways to develop this theatrical medium. Actor-musician shows have included WIND IN THE WILLOWS (Mercury Theatre), WOMAN OF FLOWERS (Forest Forge), THE BOX OF DELIGHTS (currently in development), and I have worked with the actor-musician students at Rose Bruford. This Autumn's exciting new adaptation of THE INVISIBLE MAN at the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch will be developed for actor-musicians.

I have written many shows for young audiences, particularly as resident composer with Full House. Shows include THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER, A CHRISTMAS CAROLand SNOW DOG. I have also composed the score for Full House Dance, in association with Motionhouse, for the dance piece for young people WHERE THE RIVER RUNS.

Outreach work includes creating theatre music for, and with, casts of young people all over the country, including with Youth Music Theatre, and with Scottish, Hampshire and Hertfordshire Youth Theatres, and have run workshops on song writing, musical theatre, and singing with many different groups and ages, including a large community project at Watford Palace Theatre - MILESTONES. I am a practitioner for the International Schools Theatre Association, who run festivals all over the world. I have also held the position of Composer in Residence at both Wellington College in Berkshire, and at Hills Road SIxth Form College in Cambridge.

Media composition has included scores for short films, and for TV.  Two commisions with Gamelab for BBC Learning Zones have been nominated for BAFTA Awards: MAKE A MUSICAL, a TV musical created with and for young people with special educational needs was broadcast on BBC Two, and remains available for special schools to perform. Composition for radio dramas includes multiple programmes produced by Made in Manchester for Radio 5 Live, Radio 4, and BBC Radio Wales.
